Walking in Cornwall
The walking opportunities are vast and varied in Cornwall – from moorland to woodland and of course the Cornish Coast Path. We have listed here a few of our favourite and, in general, more local walks – but do have a read around for other options.
We recommend looking up iWalk Cornwall for some great circular walks, and there is a website detailing walks, distances and points of interest on the South West Coast Path.
See separate page for walks from Botelet.
Respryn (15 mins drive from Botelet)
Lovely, gentle woodland walk that follows the river. There is a National Trust carpark on the right as you cross the bridge into Respryn. From here, you can follow the river downstream on a path through the woodland, and it’s possible to walk through into the gardens of Lanhydrock estate. Heading up river from the car park at Respryn, you can walk for about a mile on a tarmac path to reach Bodmin Parkway station. As there are no cars on this path and it’s flat, it’s a great one for learner cyclists. Check opening times for the café at Bodmin Parkway station if you wish to pop into this very rustic little space for a cup of tea.
Lanhydrock estate (15 mins drive from Botelet)
You can connect with Lanydrock from Respryn, or continue up the hill from Respryn and you come to the Lanhydrock entrance on your left about a mile up the road. From the car park, you can either head into the woodland area for walks (and there are cycle routes as well), or if you have a ticket for Lanhydrock house and gardens, you can walk through the parkland and down to the main house. There is a café at Lanhydrock House, and another in the car park.
Hall Walk (15 mins drive from Botelet to starting point at Bodinnick)
A lovely circular walk taking in views of the Fowey estuary, through woodland and a chance to explore the towns of Polruan and Fowey as well.
Begin at Bodinnick, you can park by the side of the road in places, or there is a small car park. Half way up the hill past the Ferry Inn there is a sign on your right directing you to the Hall Walk. Follow the path – which can be steep at times – through the woodland, alongside Pont Pill, until you reach Polruan. From Polruan there is a passenger ferry over to Fowey from the Quay. Enjoy some time in Fowey and walk through to Caffa Mill car park, where you take the ferry (passenger or car ferry) back to Bodinnick.
The walk is approximately 4 miles, moderate terrain
Golitha Falls (20 mins drive from Botelet to starting point)
Golitha Falls (in the Liskeard/Bodmin Moor direction) are a series of cascades and waterfalls along a section of the River Fowey as it makes its way through the ancient oak woodland of Draynes Wood. As the river flows through the woods the scenery varies, from wide wooded glades to the steep sided, craggy gorge where the falls are at their most dramatic. The Falls are most spectacular after heavy rain on the moors.
There is a car park at the start of the walk (PL14 6RX) – cross the road and follow the path along the river. Inkie’s Smokehouse is based in the car park serving drinks, ice creams and food, check opening times. Wellies are a must, and at times there are stony outcrops, so this walk isn’t buggy friendly.
Lerryn, St Winnow & Ethy Woods (15 mins drive from Botelet to starting point)
A lovely riverside walk taking in the pretty hamlet of Lerryn (with a pub and small village shop), following woodland paths to St Winnow where there’s a church, small campsite and a farm, if you’re lucky Angie’s Kiosk may be open selling cream teas and pasties. Check an OS map or iWalkcornwall for route details.
Walks around Lostwithiel (15 mins drive from Botelet)
If you are planning to visit to Lostwithiel – to stock up on groceries, browse the independent shops or have a coffee, there are some lovely and easy circular walks from the town, including visiting Restormel Castle or the Duchy Nursery. For details of walks see - www.lostwithiel.org.uk/see-and-do/walks-and-paths/
Bodmin Moor – Minions & Cheesewring (20 mins drive to Minions)
A great walk especially when the cloud isn’t too low, to take in the vast expanse of the moors. Begin at the hamlet of Minions where there is a car park, pub and small village shop and café. Walk out past wild ponies and take in various bronze and neolithic formations, check OS map or iWalkcornwall for details.
Cornwall’s Coast Path
The coast path stretches right the way around the county - and beyond. There is a great website detailing distances, points of interest and how strenuous various walks around the coast are, see - www.southwestcoastpath.org.uk Some of our favourite local stretches of the coast path include:
Polperro to Talland Bay circular walk (approx 3.5 miles for the circular walk, or only approx 1 mile going one way between Polperro and Talland)
Looe to Polperro (approx 6 miles)
Lantivet Bay circular walk (approx 3 miles)
Rame Head circular walk (approx 5.5 miles)
